Margaret Bridge reopening delayed by legal dispute
The bridge connecting two sides of the city with the southern tip of Margaret Island has been closed to traffic for nearly a year.
The reopening of Budapest's Margaret Bridge (Margit híd), which has been closed to traffic due to renovations for nearly a year, may be delayed by a legal dispute between the city and the consortium carrying out the works.
According to napi.hu, the bridge was originally scheduled to be opened at the end of August 2010, but this is unlikely, as there is an ongoing dispute between Budapest and the MH-2009 Consortium (Közgép, A-Híd and Strabag Zrt.) about pushing out the deadline for completion of the project and excess expenses.
The consortium supported its demands by saying that the contract was signed a month later than originally promised - on August 10, 2009 - and at that time, approved construction plans were not available. For this reason, the companies want to push out the deadline for reopening the bridge to traffic by 111 days and the deadline for completion of all works by 74 days.
The Budapest Assembly responded that the request was unacceptable, as the companies agreed on the deadlines when the contract was signed.
