A superfast internet service will be provided to clients of Vodafone along a new walkway in a central district of Budapest from the spring, the chief executive of the company's Hungarian unit and the mayor of fifth district told a news conference on Thursday.

Clients will be able to access and download information online with their PCs and mobile phones at a speeds ten times faster than average (21 megabits, the equivalent of 1,000 pages per second) along the new 3.3 km pedestrian road linking Kalvin Square and Szabadsag Square, Gyorgy Beck, Vodaphone's CEO, said.

The service is already up and running along the promenade on the river Danube's Pest side embankment, he said, adding that the aim is to serve businessmen and tourists, as well as turning part of the capital's downtown into an e-city.

Vodafone has spent tens of millions of forints to develop the service along the promenade, which now has the fastest connection speeds in Central Europe.

Mayor Antal Rogan welcomed the new service, which he said would greatly help the increased number of foreign delegations and official guests from around Europe during Hungary's EU presidency in January-June next year.
