Conservatives in Budapest council promote cycling

Despite Budapest's tight resources the municipal assembly must facilitate the construction of more bicycle paths, Istvan Tarlos, municipal group leader of the main opposition Fidesz party, said at a conference on Saturday.

Traffic in the capital should be viewed as an integrated system, within which cyclists must be treated as equal partners, Tarlos said, adding that "the right proportion should be established between cars and bicycles".

Antal Rogan, mayor of Budapest's central District 5, a Fidesz delegate, said that the city's streets were occupied by cars, whereas pedestrians, cyclists and public transportation should be dominant.

Domokos Schneller, local leader of Fidelitas, Fidesz's youth arm organising the conference, noted that Budapest's cycling paths totalled a mere 187 kilometres. By comparison, he added that the same figure was 1,050 in Vienna.
