Hungary's foreign ministry has appealed to the organisers of the Budapest-Bamako rally to call off the remainder of the event in Africa because there is a real danger of a terrorist attack on the participants.

The ministry said in a statement on Thursday that new information has surfaced from security services in other EU countries that the section between Mauritania and Mali is subject to a possible terrorist attack targeting the rally.

Hungary does not operate any foreign missions in the two west African countries and neither the assets nor the lives of the participants can be guaranteed, said the statement.
