The kert lowdown is here: http://www.pestiside.hu/archives/time_to_tell_granny_to_stuff_it000899.php

A kert is like a very loose term that comes from kerthelyiség, which means something like "garden-type place". It is basically a beergarden, or somewhere you can drink outdoors. Another varient is the romkert, "ruined garden", which is often entirely concrete and located in a disused inner city courtyard. Because they are opportunistic projects based on derelict real estate, they are at the mercy of local authorities and developers.

Keep an eye on pestiside for an update on this year's scene, probably tomorrow.

for those of us new to budapest...

Can I get a definition here? I know kert means garden, so we're talking about open air beer gardens or what? Why would they be shut down? Which ones are the best?

Thanks.

I went there the first day of opening - nice atmosphere - lots of young trendy types hanging out waiting for something to happen - but I'll give it another try. I think it has potential.

I'm still trying to figure out why its called Pixel.

Well, we like to build up the suspense a little bit. I've been to Pixel, it's in a good/unusual location, they are into their music and committed to making it generally all-purpose. It just depends on the crowd they attract because they want a party vibe. Wait and see...

As for the other Kerts, they were never big on promotion. I'm sure there will be some new ones and I've heard that Romkert is returning. Keep an eye on Pestiside and an ear to the grapevine.

Happy gardening,

Adrian

With Pestiside's announcement of that new courtyard bar in dist. VIII -- the Pixel bistro -- it's time to wind up the rumour mill: which kerts will be surviving this summer, which ones will die, and what new ones, if any, will appear?

I'll say this: each successive year, kertwise, seems better than the last, despite all the doom and gloom that flies around about how they're all being shut down. (The one big exception, of course, being the Mumus, which was the greatest kert ever.) Anyhoo, my fingers are crossed for 2006.

Anybody been to this Pixel bistro yet?
