It would be useful

Dorian:

Don't give up on this - it's a great idea. Also plus, note that Caboodle will shortly (or sort of shortly) be adding a movie timetable page, and I pledge to give your club lots of exposure there. I also have certain connections with varoius cinemas, though to be honest I think this may be a tough sell for them; even most long-time expats types seem to have *zero* interest in seeing what's up in Hungarian cinema.

Last year I wanted to organise a film club to show Hungarian films with English subtitles, if only for the benefit of my linguistically handicapped boyfriend. Sadly none of the cinemas (Urania for example, which is supposed to celebrate Hungarian films and has the capacity to screen from DVD in small rooms) I contacted or the other two expat websites who organise events were interested.

Most new DVDs have subtitles, and films that are sent to festivals (Taxidermia, Opium, etc.) even have a subbed reel. In this case the reel would be circulating the wolrd for a year or so, but I don't understand why it can't be shown afterwards.

Unfortunately I have no 'industry contacts'. But TheMightyQuill, if you go into the subtitle business, can I join?

They have a small but growing number of classic Hungarian movies for worldwide delivery.

Thanks for the help, even if my fears were true.

I was talking about this again with my hungarian girlfriend last night. Maybe we can go into the subtitle business together? I'm curious if the subtitles really do not exist, or if they are simply not being shown.

Once the subtitles are produced, I can't see how there's any risk to theatre owners. The worst possible scenario is that no English speakers show up, and sales stay the same. But judging from the screenings of czech movies with theatres packed with anglos in Prague, I think there's a lot to gain.

I'm also a migrant from Prague, and that's one of the (only) things i miss about it. I saw Kontroll with subtitles there, actually. I was told the rental shop upstairs at Puskin has an online list of DVDs available for rental in English, but i haven't ever seen a Hungarian film with subtitles at a cinema. Hopefully someone who knows something will post before i get fluent in Hungarian - would be nice not to wait another decade.

Sad, isn't it. I wish I could see all those great and not so great Hungarian movies too, along with the necessary subtitles (if you don't speak sufficient Hungarian).

It must be not enough expats, not enough expats who are interested, or no entrepreneur/art-theatre codger who can see a benefit in it (culturally and/or financially).

And even more so, the question is why aren't there English subtitles on many a Hungarian movie DVD. Costs are minimal. The cream usually DO have German and English subtitles, like Kontroll, but the ones at Tesco et al don't.

Being such a rare event (unless anyone can point us in the right direction), when a Hungarian movie DOES show with English subtitles (or recorded voice, where you listen through headphones with radio link), Please double-advertise ti!!

Does anyone know of a theatre that regularly or even semi-regularly plays Hungarian movies with English subtitles?

There were three or four of them in Prague, but I haven't seen any here yet. The Pestiside movie-listing link shows language and subtitle language, but I don't see any with the combination I'm looking for. Maybe there's something I've missed?

The same question also applies to video stores with Hungarian DVDs with English subtitles. I was surprised to discover that it's not all that common.

Thanks.
