The real question is whether the Hungarian culinary tradition is worth saving. I mean, why is is this a problem if I like my pasta with tuna? We should be happy for having the freedom of choice.

And of course you can have the best meals only at home..

Bela,

"why is it that the hungos love to talk about 'crisis' and sign petitions"

This way people don't actually have to do anything or sort anything out. It preserves the status quo while making the petitioners believe themselves better than the rest.

Obviously it guarantees future crises - for which everyone is grateful.

just one question: why is it that the hungos love to talk about 'crisis' and sign petitions? someone please explain it.

I agree, it's all very well blaming the customer for their poor taste (OK, that's not all that the experts who signed the petition do), but the fact is that any decent restaurant with pleasant decor and music and, most importantly welcoming and competent staff will pack the crowds in in Budapest. There are more than enough moneyed Hungarians, and even more foreigners, who know what a good meal tastes like.

Everyone agrees that real Hungarian food is excellent (and that applies to meat, fruit and veg). So why is it so hard to find in a restaurant?

Yes, of course. And the main reason is, I think, simple. Hungarian restaurants dont value quality in the basic ingredients. (like meat, to name one sad example). Quantity always wins over quality.

On a recent trip to Romania (hungarian-speaking székelyföld, in fact), I was struck by the fantastic home-made and locally produced foodstuffs that were effortlessly turned into extremely well-tasting traditional dishes.Learn from your old pals in Erdély!
