Ghosts on the Line
Written by BBC playwright, Paul Sutton
Ghosts on the Line is about communication. And the lack of it.
The action takes place over three telephone conversations: Chloe has something to tell Matthew; Richard thinks Karen has something to tell him; but have Karen and Matthew got anything to say to each other anymore?
A story of love, marriage, divorce and regret. Of letting go. Of TV cop shows and having children.
When we talk to each other, how do we silence the Ghosts on the Line...?
Originally conceived as a BBC Radio drama, Ghosts on the Line has been adapted for the Merlin Theatre.
“In Ghosts on the Line I wanted to explore the barriers which exist between people when they communicate. During telephone conversations, a large part of the communication medium is removed, of course, with the absence of body language. To reflect this, the play was originally written for BBC Radio; it soon became apparent to me, though, that the theme of isolation is far better suited to the stage, where we, the audience, can observe characters’ physical responses, yet their interlocutor cannot.” – Paul Sutton
Originally from the south of England, Paul Sutton’s best known for an altogether different kind of production, as for the past six years he’s written original Doctor Who audio dramas for the UK’s BBC Radio. He moved to Budapest in 2003.
A multi-national cast (hailing from the UK, France and Hungary) will be led by American director Anastasia Morrighan (of DNA Ház Theater Company) and visuals have been designed by Éva Mandula of world-electro act Mitsoura (www.mitsoura.net).
