Notes: Established in Pécs in 1853 by Miklós Zsolnay (1800-1880), the factory was first used to produce stoneware and ceramics. In 1863, his son, Vilmos Zsolnay (1828-1900) joined the company and led the factory to world-wide recognition by demonstrating its innovative products at world fairs and international exhibitions, such as a secret eosin glaze that was popular in Art Nouveau architecture for way the glaze gave porcelain a whimsical iridescent metallic color that changes depending on the angle. Another popular product was pyrogranite, an ornamental ceramic developed by Zsolnay and first produced in 1886. Fired under high temperature, the durable material was acid and frost-resistant and was used for roof tiling, indoor and outdoor decorative ceramics and fireplaces. The roofs of the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest and the Matthias Church have pyrogranite tiles.

The factory was nationalized in 1948, renamed Pécs Porcelain Factory and produced mainly tableware. After 1982, during "goulash" communism, the factory was privatized, and in 1991 it was renamed the Zsolnay Porcelain Manufacture. There is a nearby museum chronicling the history of the factory and the types of porcelain and glazes it has invented and produces today.
