Notes: The forested area lying between the part of the town called Alsóváros ("Lower Town") and the Tisza river is called Boszorkánysziget ("Witch Island"). It is not known whether the area was really an island in the past, likely it was a peninsula. Today, it is a popular place for walks, walking dogs and jogging.
The name is reminiscent of a tragic occasion on July 23, 1728, when six men and six women where burned alive here for witchcraft. This was the largest witch hunt in Hungarian history. Among the victims were the former judge and richest citizen of the town, 82-year-old Dániel Rózsa and Anna Nagy Kökényné, a midwife who had accused him of witchcraft.
