Notes: The University of Szeged is one of the most respected universities in Hungary and Europe. There are 30,000 students enrolled, which has made the town the cultural center of the South Alföld region. The university houses the Somogyi Library and other buildings are scattered around the city, including University of Szeged Humanities building, outside is the Water Music Fountain where students often gather between breaks.
The university was officially founded in 1872 and its predecessor was the Jesuit College of Kolozsvár (today's Cluj-Napoca, Romania), founded by István Báthory in 1581.
Notable figures at the Univerisity of Szeged include Nobel Prize winner Professor Albert Szent-György, who discovered vitamin C in Szegedi paprika.
