Notes: The central square of the 2,000-year-old city was once an Ottoman a medieval marketplace. Today, though, the sloping center of Pécs is crowded with galleries and tourist information centers. It is named after the Hungarian statesman and reforming politician István Széchenyi (1791-1860). On the south side of the square is an Art Nouveau eosin glazed Zsolnay Fountain, while at the top stands the Mosque of Gazi Kasim Pasha. In the middle of the square is the Baroque Holy Trinity Statue (Szentháromság-szobor), designed by György Kiss and Adolf Lang and erected in the 18th century.
