Notes: Youthful George sits astride a small-bodied typical Hungarian breed of horse. Though he's the patron saint of the British Isles, St. George was from southeastern Europe and died in Persia. He came to personify the ideals of Christian chivalry and was a patron of Byzantine armies long before his cult was established in England during the crusades. This statue was designed by the Kolozsvári brothers during the Middle Ages and is considered to be one of the finest sculptures of its time, because it was created separate from a building, and was rendered using a wax-melting system which is one of the oldest casting methods in the world.
