Notes: Pista Dankó (1858-1903) was a popular songwriter at the turn-of-the-century. He was born in Szatymaz, a village near Szeged and in his lifetime wrote and composed music for over 400 songs, including some for musical folk plays (népszínművek), which are popular to this day.

Dankó was Roma and spent his childhood living in poverty. While his musical talents are reflective of a strong musical tradition in the Roma society, he gained an unusual fame and popularity among Hungarian elite. His statue was made by Ede Margó in 1912 in Romantic style. A Hungarian film celebrating his life and legacy was made in 1941.
