Református Nagytemplom
Great Church4025 Debrecen, between Kálvin tér and Kossuth tér
| ![]() |
Notes: The yellow clock towers of the Great Church were such a comforting vision for weary travelers on Hungary’s Great Northern Plain that they were reportedly seen in mirages. Though from a later period than Debrecen’s Calvinist Medieval heyday (it was built in 1821 in the Neo-Classicist style), this is still Hungary’s largest Protestant Church and home also to the country’s largest church bell. Due to the church’s sheer size, it was here that on April 14 1849, hundreds crowded around the pulpit to hear Lajos Kossuth read the Declaration of Independence, and the announce the dethronement of the Hapsburg Royal Family.
