I have just had a chance to test Novelli. We were sitting outside on the terrace (i.e. on the pavement next to the main road to Nagykovácsi, close to a very smelly rubbish container) as the air-conditioning in the stylish interior proved to be over-efficient. We had a reasonably good meal with drinks for €50. The chocolate soufflé was gorgeous, the rest average. What made me wonder, was a list of minor faults which easily undermine a restaurant’s credibility. First, the aceto balsamico on the tables proved to be Hungarian. For God’s sake, in an Italian restaurant, you should not have Hungarian aceto balsamico, especially not a cheap one. If the obvious is Hungarian, what about the less obvious ingredients? Second, the wine list is poor and uninformative (producer and vintage not indicated on the list which is actually part of the menu). Third, the expensive Italian mineral water arrives opened. In Budapest, everyone would think that it is tap water … We will definitely give the place a second chance as we live nearby and getting tired of Náncsi néni. However, the owners should spice up the ‘terrace’, it looks and feels very cheap now (quality furniture, flowers, isolation from the road would be needed).
