New York Café
New York Kávéház1073 Budapest, Erzsébet körút 9-11 (inside New York Palace)

Notes: The New York Café was considered the "world's most beautiful café" when it opened originally inside the New York Palace, which was built for an American insurance company between 1891 and 1895. The design of the building was inspired by the Italian Renaissance and was compared to the palace of Bavarian King Louis II. The café was a traditional meeting place for Budapest's artists. After extensive renovations over several years, it was re-opened in May 2006.

The interior is richly restored, but the spirit of the coffeehouse is lost. I'm Hungarian, and could not wait to get in. However, I was sorely disappointed. The doorman and the host do not speak Hungarian, and they were simply rude and obnoxious to let us in. This is not a place just to come in, sip a cup of coffee and rejuvenate - the place is obviously run solely for pre-booked tourists, who flood the entrance in groups of 15-20 and march up and down flashing their cameras. Gucci and the like Italian designer accessories are also exhibited and for sale inside - now what does that have to do with a Budapest coffeehouse?! The New York has become a circus, a caricature of its once legendary image.

It will be better when the smoke dims the too-bright gilt on the ceiling. The table-design is way out of proportion to the rest of the decor. Nice little blue lights in the sidewalk at night.

The restoration reguilding of the New York Cafe is very impressiveand the coffee is of a high quality. The staff however are miserable. The real problem I have with this place is that it is written about as if it should be a place of litrrary pilgrimage. However its present incarnation it has nothing whatsoever to do with early twentieth century art literature and everything to do with 21st century high class tourist clip joints. The pictures on the ceiling are well worth a look.
