Nancsi Neni is a classic Hungarian restaurant. Its simple beginnings mean that the food is honest, simple and classic Hungarian. If you want to get close to Hungarian cuisine in Budapest then go and enjoy. As In all good Hungarian restaurants the goose liver and roast goose is perfect. The Zander is as it should be fantastic, and the turogomboc as the end of a meal are huge and as mysterious to non Hungarians as they always will be. The garden in the summer is fantastic and in the winter the inside rooms are atmospheric. If you are looking for international cuisine do not go to Nancsi Neni and moan about the food afterwards. If you are looking for a Hungarian experience go with an open mind and enjoy. The prices are very reasonable and because of its location the taxi will probably be the most expensive part of the experience. Of course if you want to go more Hungarian go to probably the only good Csarda left in Hungary which is the Hatarmenti Csarda in Bozsok in Vas Megye.

I found the food pretty good. Not great, but good. The specials are usually a nice treat. Some pretty good fruit soup, and my wife loved the dessert. I don't know about having to make reservations -- I never did -- but then again, I've only been there weekdays and off season.

If any restaurant in Budapest has lived too long off its reputation, this is it. A lovely location ensures it'll continue to pull in the punters with its ersatz charm, but really, it's just an upmarket greasy spoon. Far too many good restaurants in Budapest now to merit the trip out. Better try Bacchus out on Szentendre Island!
