If this was Haught-Ashbury in the middle sixties, Mono would be a fine place to drop some acid and freak out, and perhaps that's why it's members only. As it is, we are in booze-soaked Budapest, so we'll just have to wait and see what the future holds for Mono, the city's latest underground experiment. Two levels of underground experiment in electronic music and progressive art, to be precise. As you walk down the wide curving staircase, you inevitably wonder what function this strange venue served in its previous lives. The garish wall paintings in the WCs wouldn't look out of place in a kindergarten, the bar is like the kitchen of a ski chalet, the landing (for want of a better word) has no function whatsoever and the even-further-downstairs dancefloor is bare and appropriately industrial. And we like it. But what really makes Mono something special are the two chill-out areas reserved for those that took too much. The first requires patrons to crawl through a large round window (perhaps returning to the kindergarten theme) and watch surreal and soothing home videos projected on the walls of a small furry blue room. The second, at the very far end of the club, is a collection of psychedelic beanbags for BP's drunks and stoners to contemplate whether they will ever make it out alive.
