Liberation Monument

Notes: The statue of a female figure holding a palm branch on top of Gellért Hill is a symbol of freedom. When the monument was erected in 1947, it was originally the central statue among several statues of Soviet soldiers. After the political changes in the 1990s, these figures were removed, and the monument's plaque also was changed. It originally said the monument was erected by the grateful Hungarian people to honor Soviet heroes who liberated the country, and now it says: "To the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the independence, freedom and prosperity of Hungary."
