Very good food, albeit in a sketchy environement. Their spicy lamb (zi ran) was among the best we've had. Also had a good fried and stuffed eggplant dish in sweet and sour sauce. The stir fried vegetables (bak choi?) were fresh and flavorful. We would like to try New Lanzhou as well.

Ah, the Lanzhou. Still the best Chinese in town - notwithstanding its equally wonderful new counterpart across in Buda. But this has added character - albeit greasy character, true. Get the "potato salad" (not what you expect), the Chinese greens, the stuffed aubergine, and especially the duck heart and liver with Szechuan pepper. I could go on...

The food at this restaurant is the cheap and cheerful kind, just one notch up from the Kinai bufes dotted around the city. Portions are plentiful so go along with hungry friends.

BUT examine your bill carefully. We were overcharged and when we asked to see the bill again, it had mysteriously disappeared. On trying to reproduce the bill he deliberately inflated prices to try and reach his original total. Very shameful behaviour, hence the low rating.

Until being displaced in favor of its cross-town sister restaurant, Lan Zhou was featured on Pestiside.hu's Top 33 Restaurants in Budapest list, under the following capsule review: "With its unpretentious decor and perfectly-executed regional standards, Lan Zhou is the Budapest eatery that most reminds us of our quiet neighborhood favorites in New York's Chinatown.
