My only disappointing meal in by 6 day visit to Budapest. It began with a roach on the table, and a nearly empty dining room- never comforting signs.

The staff did not speak English very well, but could not have been any nicer in their attempts to understand us. . The food was simply ok, with the exception of the stuffed turkey which was a processed turkey roll and not turkey breast and was horrible.

Káposztás cvekedli was almost as good at that made by my grandmother - and I think they were shocked to see an American know what it was and order it - let alone 2 orders. This may be a food you have to grow up with to like.

Their soups - like most in Hungary - were good, but in each case (we tried 3) we had better versions elsewhere. Tárkonyos vadraguleves - tarragon venision soup, Gulyásleves - gulash, Húsleves maceszgombóccal goose soup with dumplings were all just ok.

My hungarian is very basic, and I have to read the english menu. Fokhagymás joghurtos pácban érlelt csirkemell csőben sütve, párolt zöldség, jázmin rizs was listed as coming with risotto - but is a simple pilaf.

In short there is nothing really wrong with this place if you live nearby - but not worth going out of your way for.

I'd say Kiskakukk should be back on the Top 33. It's one of the few places you can eat no fuss and good quality Hungarian food, in a very nice room and with pleasant service.

Have been to this restaurant twice: once with a large group and once with my visiting boyfriend. I took him there for an "authentic" Hungarian meal. Both times, the service was stellar. However, with the group (upwards of 16 people) the presentation of the food was not as detailed as when it was just me and my boyfriend. Both times I ordered the salmon dish and both times it was excellent. The waiter was very helpful with the wine selection, and he pointedly told my boyfriend not to order the hare, but instead recommended the "larded choice cut of venison" which was pretty damn good, and that's coming from a usually vegetarian eater. For desert, avoid the "Kiskakukk crépes" but do try the poppy seed "parfe" for a light, delicious alternative. Only complaint is they serve a bit too much potato-oriented garnishes, but maybe that's just a Hungarian thing and I ignorantly don't know any better. They played Frank Sinatra, so overall I'd give the place an 8 out of 10.

A charming little neighbourhood resto, quiet, unassuming, with reliable food and smart but friendly service. Good one to take mother! Or escape from the office for the afternoon with a good book...

This pleasant restaurant, which serves both purely traditional favorites as well as updates on Hungarian classics, was featured on our list of the Top 33 Restaurants in Budapest until late 2005. However, it remains one of the better "white-tablecloth" Hungarian restaurants in Pest, and may yet end up back on the T33.
