Iguana Bar & Grill
1054 Budapest, Zoltán utca 16

Notes: The bar of Budapest's most popular Mexican cantina also serves as a regular meeting-point for local expatriates, and every May the restaurant takes over the entire block for a giant Cinco de Mayo street party.

Iguana saved me from a lot of homesickness when I lived in Budapest. Definitely the best Mexican in Budapest...the best Mexican I have tried in all of Europe. Not too far off from what you can find on nearly every block in the Southern U.S.

No offense to the Brits here but we just got back from this place and it was great. I have had Mexican food at many places, USA, Africa, and Mexico and this place was pretty damn good. We shared the nachos as an appetizer and i had the surf and turf fajitas. Granted there were only 2 butterflied shrimp in the platter, but everything was really tasty. Not as good as Mexican in the USA but pretty damn close. Don't know what kind of mexican food you are eating in the UK

We ate there on Saturday. The place isn't great but it's not mediocre. Mediocre is Mexicanos in Mammut. Iguana is just average. I did like the beer with lime and rimmed with salt. Just like back in my college days.

Right... first the good news. The margarita pitchers in this place were absolutely brilliant - the best we've had in a mexican restaurant and we were pretty tipsy by the end of the evening. The atmosphere was jolly and bustling and they seated us quickly for a walk-in on a Saturday night.
But... the food was on the poor side of mediocre. We ordered the 'chili con queso' for starters which said it came with jalapenos but had no flavour other than packet cheese sauce - pretty disgusting. I had the iguana steak - the steak was ok, and rare as ordered, but just came on a bed of potatoes which were bland. Looking back at the menu it was supposed to come with a sauce which i didn't realise at the time, but i did wonder why they put an empty sauce pot on the table next to me?! My partner had the 'whoop ass beef' burritos (excuse me while i convulse with laughter) which were completely devoid of any heat or spice even though they were billed as "Hot, HOT and more hot shredded steak".
The service was ok - but they have obviously been trained in ignoring unhappy customers until they go away - which we did after grudgingly paying the bill.
I am surprised to see people on here saying that this food was as good as you would get in the US - if it is I won't bother getting any Mexican food if I'm there. Most Mexican meals I have had in the UK have been much better.
We had a lot of good meals whilst in Budapest - unfotunately this was not one of them. BUT do go and have a pitcher of Margarita... the mojitos looked good too.

If you like some food with your salt, then this is the place for you. I drank almost a litre of water while I was there and still needed a load more when I got back to my hotel. Approach with caution and avoid if you have high blood pressure!

I never really write reviews of ANYTHING, but after dining at Iguana and reading some of the below reviews I kinda feel like I should. I lived in SoCal for 7 years and can honestly say that Iguana is as good as any Mexican food I ate there - and i ate a lot of it. I must weigh at least 375 pounds although I haven't been on a scale for a while. I'm a diabetic so I couldn't try the deserts but they looked great. Also, due to my girth I require 2 chairs and the Iguana staff was very accommodating. I ended up at the bar and met some really great, fun people. (but of course, the bar stools were too small for me, but that's always the case. Although I did find some nice bucket-like bar seats at a bar in Capetown once....) All in all I think it's a really awesome place and would recommend it to anyone.

I don't know what the rest of you are eating, but I'll tell you this: I grew up in Los Angeles, home of good Mexican food, and since expating it around Europe for the past five years, I can honestly say that Iguana has the best burritos and guac on the continent. I love their margs and cosmos, and although the beer is a bit watery, if you get a bottle of corona, you're set. The atmosphere is fantastic and I love looking around at the walls, I always find something new. Also, every time I have people visiting Budapest, I take them to Iguana to force them to believe that good Mexican food doesn't just exist on the west coast of the US... and they are always converted.

Hi afx
I am wary of responding to criticisms on this thread, but after reading yours I must defend our honor.
Although we do feature a tasty jalapeno cream cheese soup, Iguana’s menu does not feature a “chicken thigh with peach” or a “chicken w chocolate sauce” or anything close to these items. And I should know as I am the co-founder and owner of the place! Please contact me directly at moortiz@mac.com so we can further discuss. Needless to say, if you were at Iguana and had an unsatisfactory experience, I will do whatever I can to take care of the problem. Cheers – Mo Ortiz

My date and I left with literal bitter taste in our mouths due to the carbonation, but figuratively still feel it. Waitress was kind enough when alerted, but replacement at that later hour wasn't realistic. We do care about the quality of the food and hope you all do, too. Just good, honest tex mex is all we're asking, it's what we've gotten used to over the years!
Cervezas still good as ever...
