Great Synagogue, Szeged
Új Zsinagóga6722 Szeged, Jósika utca 10
| ![]() |
Notes: Known to be far grander than the Old Synagogue in Szeged, the Secession-style synagogue is one of the five largest in Europe. It was built between 1900 and 1903 by Lipót Baumhorn, who designed 22 synagogues in Hungary. This one is regarded as the finest example of his work due to the symbolic representation intertwined into the architecture. For instance, the dome, made from blue stained glass, represents the earth, and within the structure are 24 columns signifying all the hours of the day, with white flowers representing faith and blue stars signifying the infinity of the cosmos. Other stained glass windows in the synagogue depict texts from the Flora of the Jews, a book by Rabbi Immanuel Löw, who was the Chief Rabbi in Szeged during an early part of the twentieth century. The entrance is on Jósika utca.
