Esterházy-kastély
Esterházy Castle9431 Fertőd, Joseph Haydn utca 2
| ![]() |
Notes: Known as the Hungarian Versailles, this Baroque and Rococo extravaganza was built in the 1760s by Prince Miklós Esterházy. It may not live up to the standards of its French counterpart; but you can see where Prince Miklós was going with it. Today, however, the grand palace is slipping into a state of distressed nobility. Some 26 rooms have been opened to the public and the rest of the building houses a secondary school and a horticultural college. The great composer Haydn lived here for almost thirty years and there is a permanent exhibition to his life and times.
