Déryné Bisztró
1013 Budapest, Krisztina tér 3

Notes: Classic downtown bistro and brasserie frequented mostly by locals for breakfast, afternoon cakes, dinner and late night drinks. The place features live jazz every night and dinner DJ on the weekends. It is a rather casual place with side-by-side dining, a large central bar, a fire place lounge and a friendly terrace.

Don't plan to come here and sit for more than an hour and a half if you have a reservation, especially on a Friday or Saturday night. We reserved a table for 4, we drank, ate several courses (meaning - we spent our share of money), and then were "politely persuaded" with a round of free drinks to go over to the bar so that another party could be seated at our table. Obviously, we were taking up too much time and preventing the restaurant from making more money from the next clientele's dinner. We noticed, however, that there was simply no room for our party at the bar. So, when the mix-up was taken care of at the very unorganized host desk (which, I might add, generally exhibits some kind of attitude .. especially if your shirt isn't buttoned down to your chest with your hairy pecs hanging out or your silicone isn't popping out of your top), we were allowed to stay at our table with our free drinks -- for about 10 more minutes. The hostess returned to free up the table once again, so we were forced to chug our last round. I think if we had stayed, they would have literally forced us out.
I really like this place - the food, atmosphere, vibe - but the attitude and demeanor of many on the waitstaff and at the host desk has got to go. Trendy places like this come and go. Being tucked away in the sleepy first district, on top of the general economic climate in Hungary these days, I would think Deryne would pay more attention to its clients and less on maintaining their so-called exclusivity. I don't pay that much to be treated like dirt, and I'm sure other would-be returning guests feel the same.

Best not to make any group reservation. I've been told of many occasions where the restaurant would call back on the day of the reservation claiming not to have room available but offering the group to head over to 'Mini' (the adjacent bar owned by the group). How can anyone be expected to reorganise a large group at the last minute? Also, take care of 'recommendations' without asking for the price. They have been known to make a 'friendly suggestion' of an item not on the menu, but which, naturally, are more expensive (can you say wine for HUF 80,000 a bottle?).

I forgot to mention - they played the same Diana Krall cd over and over again, which was really annoying. Also, we had to literally hunt our waiter down to pay for the bill. Next time we won't try so hard...

Déryné is saved by its atmosphere. But the restaurant staff ar severely under-trained and uninterested in ordinary clientele. Our lunch yesterday was very disappointing. We walked in the door to, as usual, a very busy restaurant. Lots of waiters running around but not really paying attention to anyone. It took a while to finally get someone's attention about getting seated. We were seated in the wine cellar, which was the only place left to sit - which was fine - our fault for not making reservations. From there on in we felt very lucky that we had over 2 hours for lunch on our hands because service was excruciatingly slow.
The waiter was hurried and unfriendly. The veal paprikas came out cold, and when they brought it back they had just dumped it in a pan and it was still cold! One of us asked for a second glass of wine 3 times before it was brought, and only after the last and rather aggressive reminder. The töltött kaposzta was so salty I had to eat half a tub of sour cream with it. The lamb and soups were fine. But nothing spectacular.
The owner is lucky his restaurant gets so much media attention on the Fabry show!
Having said all that, I love the interior and the vibe. I just wish the kitchen and the service would catch up already!!!

yep. very swish very polite until it comes to closing where they become *persuasively* polite... but it's all good - fab wine list; but i'd rather be given the menu in my hand than being asked what i'd like. first i'd like to know what they charge, thank you: previous experience has taught lessons in being offhand. on the whole - a very enjoyable place great music and atmosphere; and, they bend over backwards to make sure we enjoy it! almost like a chic homely living room or large flat in some ways, if you have leather seats... thumbs up!

i spent few great hours last time in Déryné and everybody was very nice and helpful during my stay.
my waiter was very friendly (sometimes toooo friendly) and offered many many things from their new menu card to taste.
you should not miss the Pasta Frutti di Mare!
hope all of you will have just as nice experiences as I usually have there!
Cheers, L.
