It should absolutely be on the Top 33. . I've been there around 30-40 times and food has always been great. It is one of the best restaurants in the city. Certainly my favourite. The quality of the food is fantastic. The service can be a little haphazard but when it's good, it's sensational.

I never understood what's was all the buzzz about that drunk French restaurant owner, the food was nothing special at best, the service was annoying after all I do not really like French cuisine anyway, so never again...

Chez Darryl's has been around for c.15 years.
Poor old Darryl has lost the plot.
Used to be a great restaurant but know that he sells baby vegetables for a living the place is living purely on past glories.
Oh and he does drink a bit which used to be part of the fun when the food was good but now..

I recently went to Chez Daniel with my wife and Mother-in-law (from the USA). The ladies persevered with the French language menu while I opted for the Hungarian one. The waiter was more than helpful and we had a marvellous trilingual discussion about one of the menu items, "frivolités de coq," or cockerel testicles. We didn't eat that but what we did order was some of the best tasting food I'd had in ages. It takes something special to make me audibly express delight over food. And the bill for 3 of us came to less than Valentines dinner for 2 at Callas in February! My Mum is over in April so I hope the chef'll still be awake then.

Valentine's Dinner at Chez Daniel. Let me start with the fact that my soup was slightly above room temperature. Then the waiter skipped a course and brought us entrees. Of course we sent the entrees back and asked them to bring the fish course that was ordered. About 45 minutes later the waiter comes back and checks on what we ordered and apologizes for technical difficulties in the kitchen. An hour and fifteen minutes later they bring us a fish course along with my girlfriend’s entrée. So she has two plates at the same time while I’m left with nothing. So she eats the fish and starts in on the entrée because we are both starving by now. We finally get the second entrée by the time the first one is cold, about 30 minutes later. The waiter poured the mineral water into my beer glass. Every table is either disgruntled or amused at the spectacle of the worst run restaurant they have ever seen. Two tables simply give up and leave.

I’m so glad I read the previous post before going there. Not because I was expecting a similar experience but because I knew what to watch out for. I must admit that it was amusing watching Chez Daniel get more and more drunk throughout the evening as he snuck in drinks from behind the bar every 20 minutes. When I saw him yawn I was sure he was well on his way to another evening of being passed out in his own kitchen.

This was seriously the worst dinner I have ever experienced. It was shocking. It was so bad that I almost recommend trying it just for laughs. Almost.

Unfortunately our anniversary was on Monday this year and we know that Monday is not the strongest going-out day of the week, but we really wanted to make THIS night special... We were the only guests at this restaurant, that was recommended by many of our friends.

Our dinner started like a perfection: we were sitting on the terrace outside, we ate the wonderful soup and finished the great main dish and we were going to put the crown on our dinner with ordering a yummy dessert. We were waiting for the waiter and he never showed up again. My husband went to check what was happening. The waiter (turned out that he was the owner) was sleeping inside and he wasn't able to wake him up, so he went in the kitchen and asked for assistance. They were apologizing and after their 2nd try the owner woke up, but didn't come out to us. My husband went in to ask for the bill and pay, the owner didn't remember what we ate, my husband had to tell him!!! Then he made the bill, but couldn't use the credit card machine, so we paid by cash. My silly husband even tipped him!!! OK, just a little... I guess a French man, like the owner, should have known how much he ruined our unfinished dinner, but he acted like everything would have been all right.

This was our first and last experience here. There are a few other French restaurants in Budapest, we will try an other one next time.

Food was very good but not great. A little more creativity and variation needed for the sides to the mains (cylinders of scalloped potatoes were good, but came with three of the four entrees we ordered...) Service needs improvement - there seemed to be only one server, and he was clearly overwhelmed as the place got busy. Overall good - but not 5 star.
