Bocskai Emlékkert
Memorial Garden4025 Debrecen, Behind the Great Church.
|
Notes: The small park behind the Great Church is known as the Memorial Garden. At its centre stands a Statue of István Bocskai. Bocskai was a wealthy landowner who lead several successful campaigns against the occupying Turkish armies, and then in the first years of the 17th century rallied the Hungarian nobles in a struggle against Hapsburg absolutism; gaining some measure of self-government and religious freedom for Protestants in the 1606 Treaty of Vienna. His triumph was short-lived, he died later that year, poisoned by his own chancellor. Another memorial column just a few meters away is in remembrance of 41 Protestant ministers sold as galley slaves in 1673, the height of the Counter-Reformation. By way of reconciliation, Pope John Paul laid a wreath here when he visited the town in 1991.
