I've discovered the secret to getting the spice and flavour back into the Bangla's food: when you order, emphatically demand from the guy that he make it spicy and flavourful. He'll raise an eyebrow and ask if you're sure -- but be firm! Even repeat yourself. Unflinching deployment of this technique twice yielded a chicken curry and a mutton biranyi that were quite potent indeed.

As an aside, today the Bangla guy offered me this rice-pudding-style concoction for dessert. I can't remember what it was called but there was cinnamon sprinkled on top and holy moly was it ever tasty. Highly recommended.

I had a take-away from there last week and it was a big disappointment. The first time I ate there it was good - spicy and full of flavour, but this time, the same food was a pale imitation; bland and formulaic spring to mind. Add to that the fact that I had to wait over an hour for it to be ready - after being told 30 minutes. I'll give them another chance and assume it was a one-off slip. I just hope they are not toning down their recipes and trying to pander too much to local tastes. As Sean Jordan says, these types of places are badly needed here.

Hole-in-the-wall ethnic eateries like this are sorely needed in Budapest. I went there for lunch yesterday and came away duly impressed -- especially by their samosas. "Our Samosa is the best in Hungary," claims the menu, and they're not kidding.
