The state medical office (Ántsz) has appealed to Budapest Police over the appearance of a new drug named mephedrone, asking them to weigh up the options of launching proceedings to ban the new stimulant.

The Ántsz said the drug has claimed several lives in the US, two in the UK and is banned in several EU countries.

Police are aware of the new drug but are powerless to react until it is put on the banned substances list. Romania yesterday made possession and use of the drug punishable, however.
